This does not function as a true MD12 battery grip in the true sense. The EL18 battery is fixed to the chamber cover and there is no latch to detach the battery from the chamber cover. I guess this is because there is a charging port on the cover to connect with the included battery charger. This also means that one cannot use a spare Nikon EL18 battery with this chamber cover. The included manual actually shows that there is a latch to detach the battery, But none here. The adapters for the EL15 and the AA batteries are fine, The morale of this story is that anyone who intend to buy and use this Battery grip should use EL15 or AA batteries for backup. I myself have a couple of Nikon EL18 batteries that, to my disappointment, cannot be used with this battery grip. Lucky for me that I also have spare Nikon EL15 batteries that I can use.
